What Oil Services A Lower Unit On A 1988 Johnson 88 Special Outboard

bboeri	posted ten-06-2002 12:08 PM ET (US) Does anyone accept experience removing the lower unit of measurement from a Johnson 88 SPL? I have a 1988 on my Montauk and want to remove information technology for the winter and then that I tin repaint it. I know that there must be more than than just removing the v bolts on the bottom. Whatever aid would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Bob

acassidy	posted 10-06-2002 03:51 PM ET (US) Yous have to remove the shift-retaining pin (that is behind the shift cable and then push the rod over) OR you must remove a screw (a petty screw from the same spot). Both are nether the bottom carb. I know this does not make much since, just once y'all look at it it might make more since. Only information technology is kind of hard to become to it and makes information technology the hardest part of removing the lower unit of measurement. Once the shift rod is costless then remove the 5 bolts from the longer unit. Remove the steering torque fin and marking its location. At present in that location is one more than bolt up inside there that y'all will see one time this is removed. That would go far 6 bolts. I would leave the four back bolts for last and reomve them slowly together to drop the unit. When removing it have clearance for the drive shaft and shift rod. Best thing though is to buy the book for your motor. I hope I did not make this more confusing than it actually is. Archie
gvisko	posted 10-07-2002 ten:00 PM ET (US) on the johnson 88 spl remove cotter pin up by the shift rod and Push bolt towards port side to release . I spent 3 hours once trying to pull it out with no luck. when you button. it will fall right down and then exist ready gvisko
